Suhr Guitars was founded by John Suhr in Lake Elsinore, California in 1997, after a career that included a pivotal period at Fender's Custom Shop in the early 1990s where he served as Master Builder. Suhr's goal was to build the world's finest S-style and T-style electric guitars — instruments that honored the fundamental design of the classic Fender originals while eliminating every shortcoming he had identified in fifty years of evolution: inconsistent fretwork, excessive 60-cycle hum, imprecise neck radii, and hardware that compromised tuning stability under heavy use. The result was a guitar company that has become the benchmark against which boutique S-style instruments are measured.
This Classic S in 3-Tone Burst represents the core of Suhr's S-style lineup: an alder body, maple neck, maple fingerboard, and three V60LP single-coil pickups — Suhr's voiced interpretation of a late-1950s Fender single coil, warm and full with vintage bell-like clarity. The SSCII passive hum-canceling system reduces 60-cycle hum substantially without affecting tone or requiring active circuitry — one of Suhr's most celebrated engineering contributions to the S-style format. The neck profile — a 60s C Vintage Standard at .810"–.930" — is one of the most comfortable and familiar profiles in the Classic S range, sitting in the hand with the easy confidence of a well-worn vintage Fender.
Hardware is exemplary throughout: a Gotoh 510 two-point tremolo with bent saddles and steel block for maximum sustain and stability, and Suhr's own locking tuners. Stainless steel medium frets on a 9"–12" compound radius fingerboard provide effortless bending across the full length of the neck.
